Your Problem Comes First — Our Experience Is Here to Help

Some certificates are simply pieces of paper. Others represent years of hard work, sacrifice, learning and determination.

For me, this certificate is one of those special achievements.

On 30 March 1989, I received my Employee Development Programme – Underground Electrician certificate from Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited, Gold and Uranium Division.

My name, A.D. Grove, is printed on that certificate, but behind those few letters and that date were three years of studying, training and learning.

Three years that helped shape my career

The programme was not simply about learning how to connect wires or repair electrical equipment. It covered a wide range of subjects associated with working as an electrician in a demanding underground mining environment.

The certificate records subjects including:

  • Organisation
  • U/G Environment
  • Mining
  • Artisan Management
  • Oxy/Acetylene Equipment
  • High Tension Reticulation
  • General Electrical
  • Low Tension Reticulation
  • Centralised Blasting
  • Battery Locomotives
  • Trolley Line Locomotives
  • Winches

Looking back now, I realise just how valuable that training was.

Working underground required discipline, technical knowledge, problem-solving ability and respect for electricity and machinery. There was very little room for guessing. You had to understand what you were doing and, more importantly, understand the consequences if you got it wrong.

More than a qualification

Receiving this certificate in 1989 was an important milestone in my life.

But what I didn’t know at the time was just how much the knowledge gained during those three years would influence the rest of my career.

The electrical principles, fault-finding skills and understanding of machinery became the foundation for much of what I went on to do.

Over the years, I continued learning and developing my skills. Eventually, that knowledge became an important part of my work in the appliance repair industry, where diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults requires exactly the same basic approach:

Understand the system. Find the fault. Test before replacing. Repair the problem.

That philosophy has stayed with me throughout my career.

From underground mining to appliance repairs

Today, when I look at this certificate hanging on the wall, I don’t just see an old qualification from 1989.

I see the beginning of a journey.

The lessons learned during those three years helped build the technical foundation that I have carried with me for decades.

That experience has contributed to my approach at Welkom Appliance Repairs today — particularly when dealing with difficult faults that other technicians may struggle to diagnose.

I believe that good technicians aren’t simply parts replacers.

A good technician understands why something has failed.

That means testing, thinking, investigating and using experience to find the real cause of the problem.

A certificate from 1989 — and a lesson that still matters today

There is another reason this certificate is important to me.

The date on it is 30 March 1989.

That means this document is now more than 37 years old.

Technology has changed enormously since then. Computers, electronic control boards, inverter motors, sensors and modern appliances have transformed the repair industry.

But one thing hasn’t changed:

You still have to understand how things work if you want to repair them properly.

That is something I learned during those three years of study, and it is something I have carried with me ever since.

Passing knowledge on

Today, I am proud not only of the work I have done myself, but also of being able to pass knowledge and experience on to the next generation.

After decades in the electrical and appliance repair industry, I have learned that experience is something worth sharing.

A certificate like this represents education.

The decades that followed represent experience.

And putting the two together is what creates real technical knowledge.

Why I am sharing this

I wanted to share this old certificate because it tells a small part of the story behind Welkom Appliance Repairs.

When a customer calls us with an appliance that isn’t working, they aren’t just getting someone who knows how to change a component.

They are getting decades of accumulated electrical, mechanical and fault-finding experience.

This certificate is a reminder of where part of that journey began.

Three years of study.
A certificate earned in 1989.
Decades of experience since then.
And a lifetime of learning that continues today.

That’s something I am genuinely proud of.
