Founder Andy Grove doesn’t just have decades of appliance repair experience — he holds a formal, government-issued qualification as an electrician. Here’s why that matters.
A Certificate That’s Been Framed for Almost 40 Years
In 1987, four years after founding what would become Welkom Appliance Repairs, Andrew Daniel Grove — known to customers simply as Andy — sat a qualifying test set by South Africa’s Department of Manpower under the Manpower Training Act of 1981. He passed, and was issued Certificate MYX 906, formally qualifying him as an electrician. Tested on 4 September 1987, issued three weeks later on 25 September 1987, that certificate has hung on the workshop wall ever since.
It’s easy to overlook a framed piece of paper from decades ago. But it’s the difference between a technician who’s picked up appliance repair through experience alone, and one who was formally tested and certified on the underlying electrical work every modern appliance depends on.
Why This Sets Us Apart
As far as we’re aware, this makes Andy one of very few — quite possibly the only — qualified electricians running an appliance repair business in Welkom, and rare even by South African standards. Most appliance technicians learn the trade through apprenticeship and hands-on repair work, which is valuable in its own right. Andy has that too, built up over more than 40 years. But he also has the formal electrical qualification underneath it — the training that explains why a fault happens, not just which part usually fixes it.
That combination matters most on the electrical faults that are hardest to diagnose correctly: intermittent faults, wiring issues, control board problems, and anything where guessing wrong means paying for a part that was never the problem.
